If you only read this
- For most carpet cleaners, Google Local Services Ads are the first paid channel: pay per lead, the Google Guaranteed badge, and placement above regular ads.
- Google Search ads work, but only with a long negative keyword list. Rental machines, Rug Doctor, DIY and job seekers will eat the budget otherwise.
- Meta is for people who already know you: retargeting, recall and seasonal promotions. It's weak at catching someone with wet carpet today.
- Count booked jobs, not clicks. Weight phone calls heavily, because that's how most carpet cleaning gets booked.
- Judge Search by booked jobs, not cost per tracked lead. Tight Search campaigns built for specific high-booking jobs can look pricier on the dashboard and still be the better money.
Start with Google Local Services Ads
Local Services Ads (LSA) sit at the very top of many carpet cleaning searches, above regular Google Ads. Carpet cleaning is a supported category, and qualifying businesses get the Google Guaranteed badge after Google's screening. You pay per lead (a call or message from a customer), not per click.
- Setup: expect business verification, background checks for owners and techs as Google requires, and license and insurance where applicable. Budget a few weeks for approval.
- Ranking: Google weighs your reviews, responsiveness, proximity and business hours. Answering calls fast and keeping hours accurate matters more than bids alone.
- Job types: choose the services and job types you want. Turn off the ones you don't do.
- Disputes and credits: if a lead is clearly invalid (a job seeker, a wrong service or a spam call), you can dispute it or flag it for credit. Google's process has changed over time, so review your leads every week and act on the bad ones.
- Housecall Pro: LSA leads can flow into Housecall Pro's Job Inbox, so they're not lost on a phone.
LSA rewards the companies that act like a business on the phone. Answer every call live during your listed hours. If you can't, return it within minutes, not tomorrow. Mark leads as booked in the LSA dashboard or app, reply to messages fast, and keep asking every customer for a review, because reviews feed both the ranking and the badge people see. A company that answers fast with 150 reviews will often beat a company with a bigger budget and slow callbacks.
Two real results
| Account | Period | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Simply Clean Carpet Care, Lexington, KY | Oct 2024–Sep 2026 (24 months) | 1,663 LSA leads at $28.13 average cost per lead |
| JS Steam Works, launched on LSA | Nov 2024–Jan 2025 | 19 leads at $30.62 per lead |
| Same company | Jun–Aug 2025 | 138 leads at $31.57 per lead, which is 7x the volume at about the same cost per lead |
Google Search ads work well if you block the wrong searches
Google Search ads let you choose keywords, write your own ads and send people to a specific page. That control is useful for higher-ticket services, such as pet urine treatment, upholstery, tile and grout, oriental rugs and commercial work, and for towns where LSA volume is thin.
The problem is that "carpet cleaner" means two things: a company and a machine. Without negatives, a big share of your budget goes to people who will never book. Start with a list like this and add to it weekly from the search terms report:
| Negative group | Examples |
|---|---|
| Rental and machines | rent, rental, rug doctor, bissell, hoover, machine, shampooer, best carpet cleaner, carpet cleaner for sale, home depot, walmart |
| DIY | diy, how to, homemade, vinegar, baking soda, solution recipe |
| Jobs and training | jobs, hiring, salary, employment, training, certification class, start a carpet cleaning business |
| Equipment and supplies | truck mount for sale, wand, chemicals wholesale, used equipment |
| Wrong service | car interior, auto detailing, carpet installation, carpet store |
Beyond negatives, use phrase and exact match for core terms, set the location to people in your service area (not "interested in" it), schedule ads for hours someone can answer the phone, and send each ad group to the matching service page, not the home page.
Costs vary by market. Google Keyword Planner data we pulled in July 2026 put top-of-page bids for the "cleaning services" keyword basket between $4.32 and $22.89 nationally, with big metros running roughly 1.09x to 1.51x higher.
Use Meta ads for retargeting, recall and seasonal promotions
Nobody opens Facebook looking for a carpet cleaner. Meta is good at reaching people who already know you or are likely to need you soon, and poor at catching urgent searches. Use it for:
- Retargeting people who visited your site and didn't book.
- Recall and reactivation to your customer list: past customers due for their 12–18 month cleaning.
- Seasonal promotions ahead of spring cleaning and the pre-holiday rush, and to fill January and February.
- Before-and-after content from real jobs: a pet-stained hallway, a dingy sectional, grout lines.
Your customer list is your best Meta audience. Housecall Pro's Mailchimp sync is one-way (Housecall Pro to Mailchimp), and you can export a customer list to upload as a Meta custom audience, then target people whose last cleaning was 12 or more months ago. Exclude anyone who booked in the last few months so you're not paying to remind people who just saw you. A simple creative works best: a real before-and-after, the owner's name, and a clear seasonal reason to book now.
Keep offers honest. A "3 rooms for $99" ad that becomes $400 at the door books the job and loses the review. See pricing strategy.
The landing page and the phone call turn paid clicks into jobs
Ads get the customer to you. The landing page and the phone call decide whether they book. Most wasted ad spend we find isn't in the ad account at all; it's in a slow page or a missed call.
The landing page
- Match the search. Someone searching "pet urine carpet cleaning" should land on a page about pet urine, with photos of that work.
- Put the phone number and booking button at the top, where they're visible without scrolling on a phone.
- Show a price signal, such as starting prices, a range, or your minimum. People clicking ads are comparing.
- Put reviews on the page, ideally ones that mention the same problem.
- Make the page fast on a phone. A slow page burns the click you just paid for.
The call
Whoever answers the phone is part of the ad campaign. Answer live during business hours. Have a short script: ask what needs cleaning, how many rooms or pieces, any pets or stains, then give a clear price range and the next open slot. Text a confirmation from Housecall Pro so the job is on the schedule before the customer calls the next company. Record the lead source on the job while you're on the phone, not at the end of the week.
If your calls go to voicemail during the day because everyone is on a job, fix that before spending more on ads. An answering service or a dispatcher costs less than the leads you're losing. See carpet cleaning websites for the page side.
How much should you budget for paid ads?
We recommend starting at $1,000–$3,000 a month in ad spend per active channel, paid directly to Google or Meta, separate from management. In the accounts we run, total marketing usually lands around 7–12% of gross revenue; that's our guidance, not an industry benchmark.
| Situation | Where to start |
|---|---|
| No paid ads yet | LSA only, at the low end of the range |
| LSA working, want more volume | Raise LSA first; add tight Search campaigns for high-ticket services |
| Strong customer list, slow winters | Add Meta for recall and seasonal promos |
| New service area | LSA and Search into the new towns while city pages mature |
Raise budgets a few weeks before spring and the November–December rush, so campaigns are learning when demand arrives. Pull back in the slowest weeks, but don't switch everything off; restarting costs you the learning. And when the schedule is full, it's often smarter to lower the budget a notch than to turn ads off and let a competitor take your spot in the auction.
Give any new channel at least two to three months before judging it. The first weeks are the platform learning, and a single slow week tells you very little.
Track booked jobs and give phone calls more weight
Most carpet cleaning gets booked by phone. If your tracking only counts form fills, every platform will optimize for the wrong thing.
- Put call tracking on the website and in ads, with calls over a set length counted as conversions and valued higher than forms.
- Track online booking as its own conversion. Housecall Pro's Online Booking can redirect customers to a thank-you page on your domain after they book, which gives you something to measure.
- Fill in Lead Source on every job in Housecall Pro, so you can count booked jobs by channel.
- Offline conversions: a Zapier template exists that sends Housecall Pro scheduled jobs to Google Ads as offline conversions, so Google learns which clicks became jobs.
- Review LSA separately, since LSA reports its own leads.
There are limits. Housecall Pro's help center doesn't document GA4, Google Tag Manager, Google Ads tags or Meta Pixel inside Online Booking, so plan tracking around the redirect page and lead sources. Details in tracking Housecall Pro bookings in Google Analytics.
Avoid these common paid ads mistakes
- Running without negatives lets the budget fund rental-machine shoppers and job seekers.
- Running broad match with no guardrails alongside "Optimize for clicks" bidding is a common mistake.
- Ads running when nobody answers. A missed call on LSA still costs you, and hurts your ranking.
- Sending every ad to the home page. Pet urine searches should land on the pet urine page.
- Judging by cost per lead alone. A cheaper lead that books a $150 job may be worse than a pricier one that books $500.
- Not disputing bad LSA leads. Review them every week.
- Letting the platform write everything. Auto-generated ads and auto-applied recommendations often expand into searches you'd never pay for. Read what changed before you accept it.
