Housecall Pro's call tracking numbers tie each call to a lead source inside HCP, which suits fixed sources like your Google Business Profile, Yelp and mailers. CallRail adds what HCP's call tracking setup article doesn't mention: website numbers that swap for each visitor, and call data sent to GA4 and Google Ads. If you buy Google clicks, that second part lets Google Ads optimize for calls, not just clicks.
Why call tracking matters for a carpet cleaner
Carpet cleaning still books by phone. A call from an ad or your Business Profile is closer to a job than a click on a booking button. That's why we value calls more than booking clicks in reporting and in ad bidding, as our guide to tracking Housecall Pro bookings in Google Analytics explains.
Call tracking means giving each marketing source its own phone number. With both Housecall Pro and CallRail, calls to a tracking number forward to the phone you already answer. The number the customer dialed tells you which source sent them.
Without call tracking, a ringing phone tells you nothing about where the customer came from. Here are questions it can answer that a plain phone line can't:
- Did your Google Business Profile or Yelp bring in more calls this month?
- Is the postcard to past customers paying for itself, or would those recall calls have come in anyway?
- Which Google Ads keywords lead to calls, not just clicks?
- Do upholstery and area rug callers find you through different pages than whole-house callers?
What Housecall Pro's call tracking numbers do
Housecall Pro (HCP) describes call tracking as "an add-on feature that allows you to track your best-performing marketing channels." HCP says you can "purchase a call tracking number and add that number to a unique advertising source." Its help center gives setup steps for sources such as Google Business Profile, Facebook, HomeAdvisor, Angi's, Yelp and Thumbtack.
Your phones don't change. HCP says "we forward calls from your call tracking number to your destination number," so the office keeps answering the way it does now. You pick a number by entering a three-digit area code, so you can search for one in your own area code.
The big advantage is where the data lives. In HCP's words, "you will know exactly where they found you because that call tracking number will be tied to your lead source." That puts the source in the same system as your jobs and revenue, and HCP lets you report on job, customer and estimate lead sources from its Reporting tab.
| Question | What HCP's call tracking setup article says |
|---|---|
| Can a number be tied to one lead source? | Yes. Each number is added to an advertising source and tied to a lead source. |
| Do calls reach my current phones? | Yes. Calls forward to your destination number. |
| Are calls recorded? | The article points to Voice settings for call recording and lists a permission to listen to call recordings. |
| Can it swap numbers on my website? | Not mentioned. |
| Does it send calls to GA4 or Google Ads? | Not mentioned. |
| What does it cost? | The article calls it an add-on but lists no price or plan. |
What CallRail adds: website number swapping, GA4 and Google Ads
CallRail is a dedicated call tracking product. Its biggest difference is dynamic number insertion, or DNI, which changes the phone number shown on your website. CallRail says you add it "with the simple installation of a JavaScript snippet," and its script "will detect the phone numbers on your web page and swap them with the correct tracking number."
Source tracking and visitor tracking
CallRail offers two levels. Source tracking "assigns a unique number to campaigns or promotions," and CallRail says "It works for both online and offline tactics." Visitor tracking "assigns a unique phone number to each individual who visits your website after an online search," so you can see "which search terms they used, and which pages they saw."
For a carpet cleaner, that means a call from someone who searched for pet odor removal and read your pet page shows up differently from a call off the homepage. One fixed number on your website can only tell you the call came from the website.
Call recordings
CallRail's call tracking page says, "Record every call so you always have the full conversation." Recordings let you hear whether the office booked the job or lost it on a price question. CallRail also offers an optional pre-call announcement that "informs your callers their call may be monitored." Check your state's call recording rules before you turn recording on.
GA4 and Google Ads
GA4 is Google Analytics 4, Google's website analytics tool. CallRail's GA4 integration works by "sending your phone call, text, and form submission data as events to Google Analytics," and you can "track them as conversions." Its Google Ads integration "matches each paid click in Google Ads to calls, texts, and forms data in CallRail" and gives "source, campaign, ad group, and keyword level insights."
CallRail warns that without that data, "your automated bidding strategy and Performance Max Ads are optimizing based on clicks only." With call data flowing back, CallRail says "you can ensure your campaigns are optimized for calls, texts, and forms too." Can you use CallRail with Housecall Pro?
Yes. HCP's help center has an article on connecting the two, and it says to "Make sure you're on a Housecall Pro Essentials plan or above." You start in CallRail, open its Integrations library, select the Housecall Pro card and click Authorize.
The connection helps the office recognize returning customers. HCP says "CallRail can look up incoming phone calls to see whether the caller is already in your current HCP customer database." When a returning customer calls, "a notification will pop up in Housecall Pro and let you know who's calling," and clicking it opens that customer's profile with past jobs. You can also turn on Chrome browser notifications from the CallRail app page in HCP.
The article doesn't describe CallRail filling in the Lead Source field on HCP jobs. Plan on whoever answers the phone setting the Lead Source on every new customer and job. Here is how we would run the two together:
- Put CallRail's script on your website so visitors from Google Ads and organic search see a tracking number.
- Connect CallRail to GA4 and Google Ads, and count only calls that reach a real conversation as conversions.
- Connect CallRail to HCP so the office sees who's calling.
- Give each fixed source, such as your Business Profile, Yelp or a mailer, one tracking number from one tool, not both.
- Set the Lead Source in HCP on every new customer and job, using what CallRail shows about the call.
- Once a month, compare calls by source in CallRail with completed jobs by source in HCP.

Keeping one consistent number on your Google Business Profile
NAP stands for name, address and phone number. Search engines and AI assistants compare those details across your profile, website and directories. When the details conflict, the machine gets less sure, and a machine that is less sure is less likely to name you.
Google's guidelines say "The phone number must be under the direct control of the business" and ask you to "Use a local phone number instead of a central call center helpline number whenever possible." They don't mention call tracking numbers by name.
HCP's setup steps tell you to "add your tracking number as your primary business phone number" on your Business Profile, and add, "You can still have your company phone number as a secondary number." Our Google Business Profile guide for carpet cleaners gives two options: your main number, or a tracking number as primary with your main number as an additional phone.
- Keep your main number on directories. Yelp, Facebook, Bing and the rest should all list the same main number.
- Choose one Business Profile setup and leave it. Use the main number, or a tracking number as primary with the main number as additional. Don't keep switching.
- Don't copy a swapped number from your website into a listing. Visitor tracking gives each website visitor their own number, so the one you see may not be the one you keep.
- Tag the profile's website link with UTM parameters. UTM tags are short labels added to a link that tell GA4 where a visit came from, so profile visits show up separately.
- Update every listing before you delete a tracking number. HCP warns that after you delete one, customers can no longer reach it.

Which call tracking setup fits your company?
Neither tool is the wrong choice. The right setup depends on where your calls come from and whether you buy clicks from Google.
| Your situation | Setup that fits | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Calls come mostly from your Business Profile, referrals and Yelp, and you don't run Google Search ads | HCP call tracking numbers on each fixed source | One number per source answers the question, and the source sits in HCP with your jobs. |
| You run Google Search ads or Performance Max | CallRail on the website, connected to Google Ads and GA4 | Google can learn from calls down to the keyword, not just from clicks. |
| Your site gets steady traffic to service pages like pet odor or tile and grout | CallRail visitor tracking | You see which pages and searches lead to calls. |
| You send mailers, door hangers or recall postcards | One fixed tracking number per piece, from either tool | The jobs each piece books show up under their own lead source. |
| You already use CallRail and are on HCP Essentials or above | Connect the two | Caller pop-ups help the office spot returning customers. |
Both companies can change their pricing, so we haven't listed prices here. Check the current price of HCP's call tracking add-on and CallRail's plans, then weigh the cost against what one booked whole-house cleaning is worth to you.
