In the accounts we run, carpet cleaning SEO usually shows first movement in 60–90 days, real ranking gains in months four to nine, and compounding from months nine to twelve. That's our guidance, not a promise. Month one is setup and tracking, so expect Search Console impressions and map pack activity to rise before clicks and booked jobs do.
What happens in month one of carpet cleaning SEO?
Month one is setup. Not much changes on Google yet, and that is normal. The work done this month decides how clean your data will be for every month after it. For the full overview, start with our carpet cleaning SEO guide. This post goes one level deeper and walks through the timeline month by month.
- Audit your local presence. We review your Google Business Profile (GBP, the listing that shows on Google Maps), your listings, your website, the competitors in your map pack and where your calls come from today.
- Clean up the foundation. We start with quick wins: categories, services, consistent name, address and phone (NAP), broken pages and missing schema. Schema is code on your site that spells out your business details for search engines.
- Set up tracking. Each call and form is tagged with its source when it comes in, so later reports can show booked jobs by channel instead of guesses.
- Submit a sitemap in Search Console. Google Search Console is Google's free tool for seeing how your site shows up in search. A sitemap is a file that lists the pages on your site you want Google to find.
Our guide sums up weeks one to four this way: "You get better data, but not much else yet." If you need the phone to ring this month, that is a job for ads. In the accounts we run, ads and Local Services Ads (LSA, the pay-per-lead ads at the very top of Google) usually start producing leads in 30–45 days. That's our guidance, not a promise. Our paid ads guide covers how to run them while SEO builds.
Months two and three: impressions come before clicks
In the accounts we run, SEO usually shows first movement in 60–90 days. That's our guidance, not a promise. The work shifts from fixing to building. Service and city pages get built or rebuilt, and reviews start coming in on a steady rhythm.
New pages don't show up on Google the day they go live. Google says it primarily finds pages through links from pages it has already crawled, and that crawling can take anywhere from a few days to a few weeks. Even then, Google doesn't guarantee that it will crawl, index or serve your page. That lag is one reason a new page can take weeks to show any impressions.
What to look for in Search Console
In the Search Console Performance report, an impression counts each time your site appeared in search results. A click counts each time someone clicked from Google Search to your site. A searcher has to see your page before they can click it, so impressions are the first number to move.
| Number | What it counts | What to look for in months two and three |
|---|---|---|
| Impressions | Times your site appeared in Google results | Rising on service and town searches, such as "pet urine carpet cleaning" plus your town |
| Clicks | Times someone clicked through to your site | Small numbers, which is fine this early |
| Average position | The average spot of your top result | The trend over several weeks, not one day's number |
| Business Profile views | People who viewed your profile on Search and Maps | More map pack impressions |
Our guide expects "more map pack impressions, early long-tail rankings" in months two and three. Long-tail means narrow searches with fewer searchers, such as "couch cleaning in Gahanna" or "dog urine carpet cleaning near me." Our guide calls service and problem searches like these the highest-intent and least contested searches in the trade.
Months four to nine: when real ranking gains show up
In the accounts we run, real ranking gains usually come in months four to nine. That's our guidance, not a promise. Our guide describes this stretch as the time when pages mature and links and citations accumulate. A citation is a listing of your name, address and phone on another site, such as Yelp, Bing or the BBB.
Watch your Business Profile calls
Our guide calls the map pack the biggest lever for most carpet cleaning companies, because the calls come straight off the listing. The result we expect in this stretch is "real ranking gains on service and city terms, more calls from the profile." That is why Business Profile calls are a number to check every month.
Know what that number measures. Google defines Business Profile calls as the number of times a customer clicked on the call button on your profile. A customer who reads your number and dials it by hand won't show up as a click on that button. Our call tracking, set up in month one, tags each call with its source when it comes in.
Why calls matter more than rank
A ranking report can look great while the phone stays quiet, and it can look flat while calls climb. Your monthly report should show calls, leads and booked jobs by source. Ours does, so you can see what each channel produced for your trucks that month.
After month nine: how SEO results compound
In the accounts we run, SEO compounds from months nine to twelve. That's our guidance, not a promise. Our guide expects organic results and the map pack to "carry a growing share of booked jobs" in this stretch. Pages that already rank keep booking cleanings long after the work is done.
The work doesn't stop, but it changes shape. Each month we add or improve service and city pages where you want more jobs. That might mean a new town where your move-out cleans keep growing, or a deeper page for upholstery add-ons.
What it looked like at B&G Carpet Cleaning
B&G Carpet Cleaning in Westerville, Ohio, is our family's company, and we test our marketing there before we use it for clients. Comparing April–September 2025 with April–September 2026, B&G's Google Business Profile calls went from 18 to 100. Our guide is direct about the timing: none of that happened in month one, and those gains came in the compounding phase. You can see the details on our case studies page.
What speeds carpet cleaning SEO up or slows it down?
The timeline above is our guidance for a typical account. Your starting point moves it. Some factors are in your hands, and some are not.
| Factor | Speeds it up | Slows it down |
|---|---|---|
| Reviews | A steady flow of real reviews already on your profile | Few reviews, or long gaps between them |
| Google Business Profile | Complete, accurate details, services and service area | Missing services, wrong hours, or a phone number that doesn't match your site |
| Website | Fast on a phone, one page per service, easy to add pages | Slow, copy-paste city pages, or a platform you can't edit |
| Competition | A map pack with few well-run profiles | Franchises and strong independents chasing the same searches |
| Distance | Customers searching near your business | Towns far from where your business is located |
Google says that more reviews and positive ratings can help your business's local ranking. It also says businesses with complete and accurate info are more likely to show up in local search results. Distance, which Google describes as how far each business is from the customer who's searching, is the factor you can't change.
Reviews are where an owner has the most control. Ask every customer, every time, and never pay for reviews or only ask the happy ones. Our reviews and reputation guide and Google Business Profile guide cover both in detail. If your website is the bottleneck, read carpet cleaning websites before spending on anything else.
How to check your SEO progress each month
You don't need a 30-page report to know whether the work is moving. Set aside 15 minutes at the start of each month and run these checks.
- Search Console: Compare impressions and clicks with the month before, and look at searches that include your town names.
- Business Profile: Compare calls, website clicks and direction requests with the month before.
- Your CRM: Count booked jobs where the source was Google search or Maps.
- Reviews: Count new reviews this month and check that each one got a reply.
- Pages: List the pages that were added or improved this month.
Some months will dip. Carpet cleaning is seasonal, so look at the trend over six months or more instead of one slow January. Be wary if month four arrives and you still can't see what was built, or if the report lists rankings with no line for calls or booked jobs.
